agree Ken Cox : the brugklas forms the transition between primary school and secondary school (hence the name); it also has essentially the same curriculum for all students (who must select a particular 'stream' in the following year)

Preppies (preparatory class pupils)

five-year-olds usually spend the first year in prep class before going on to first grade. Hence the expression 'bridging class' (in Dutch).
Peer comment(s):

disagree Ken Cox : the brugklas is the first year of secondary school, not the first year of primary school!

disagree BBQ : The "brugklas" is indeed the first year of secondary school, so it's about 12-year-olds we're talking!! How do I know this? I am Dutch and I went to school in the Netherlands.
