V článku o význačném italském módním návrháři Renzovi Rossovi:

Nejsem žádný buržoust, jsem farmář. Takže jsem teď začal jezdit do práce na kole. Ale mám blbý pocit, že se flákám.


Prosím o nějaký expresivní výraz - napadlo mě "fogey", ale nejsem si úplně jist. :)

I could imagine the translator into Czech arriving to this English word, and, on reflection, typing in buržoust with certain glee, as it acquires an additional 270-degree twist in a post-communist-country vocabulary.

That's a shame, it could have helped a lot. Although presumably the source of the quote is indeed Italian or English, if it is the Ich-form, so I am trying to think what phrasing (in English, at least) made the Czech author opt for this particular word.

I don't think the Czech article has been translated from English. It is an original Czech article. A doplnění: tento pán pochází z malého města, takže buržoust může být něco jako maloměšťák / omezenec / šosák apod.

I had to look bourgie up (never heard it before), so perhaps I’m not the only one who would have to think twice what it meant. I’m guessing, if the Czech has been translated from English, it might even be something on a par with “I'm not from the [bloody] chattering classes”.

I believe that the language here does not render that certain "refinement" of the word gentleman, but rather a slightly derogatory, if not alienating, mild slang expression. Therefore I thought slang would be appropriate here.
Still, why should a gentleman not want to use a bike? I think the emphasis is on possessions, not demeanor.

We use “petit-bourgeois” when groping for a pejorative, so I guess “I'm from farming stock, not the petit-bourgeoisie” could be an option.

I agree that you should avoid “bourgeois”, I don’t think he would use that in this particular context. Fogey is a bit misplaced – it means (to me) a decrepit old person. I would consider “gentleman” – “I’m not a gentleman, I’m a farmer”. Maybe even "capitalist", but that might be pushing it. Your best bet would be to find the original quote in Italian/English, but I have had no luck so far.

Myslím, že by také toho buržousta bylo možno úplně vynechat. On ani není žádný farmer at heart, rozhodně ne způsobem života. Byl vzorný syn a pomáhal rodičům, ale odešel jakmile to bylo možné, v patnácti už byl designer.

Věří na jednoduchost, mladistvost, originalitu, atd.
Z toho důvodu by možná bylo hezké říci
