Czech term

Pribramsko

Czech to English Other Geography geography
I need to know how to write the names of Czech okresy in English. Should I keep the original with -sko, or is something like "Pribram county" or "Pribram and surrounding area" more appropriate?

district of Příbram

another possibility
Peer comment(s):

agree Nicholas Miller : that's the closest, except add 'the' and a capital 'D'. The proper Czech is 'okres Příbram' see http://www.regionycr.cz/PRIBRAM.HTM

yes, you are right, I am sorry for inaccuracy

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "The best choice, though there wasn't any explanation. Thank you!!!"

Příbramsko

either write in Czech with all diacritical signs i.e. Příbramsko, or make it English and wrire Pribram county, possibly with all the signs as well.
Peer comment(s):

agree Marian Novorolsky : that what I wanted to suggest

disagree Nicholas Miller : sorry I think that's rubbish. Without the diacritics it isn't anything at all

Pribram (and surrounging) area

This is not a formal region - and never is, with the -sko suffix.
Peer comment(s):

agree Jana Louvarová : yes, but with "surrounding":-) - or maybe also "Pribram region"

Region of Příbram

I suggest not to use the suffix -sko. In Czech, this designates an area (region) around a town. If someone will look at the map, he will find PŘÍBRAM (the name of the town or place) and not PŘÍBRAMSKO. It has nothing to do with the administration boundaries. If you mean the adminstration division, then use COUNTY OF PŘÍBRAM. Depending on to whom the text is determined, you can use diacritic (this is what you see in the map)
Peer comment(s):

agree Nicholas Miller : except it's an 'okres' not a 'kraj/region'

Príbram County

I should have written it at the first stab, although the term Příbramsko implies the county with county authorities seated in Příbram. But,of course, it is no official name for a state administrative unit.
Peer comment(s):

agree Zenny Sadlon : Absolutely! Except, haven't counties been abolished as administrative units? :-) Příbramsko can mean the generic Příbram region which might extend byond the county boundaries.

neutral Nicholas Miller : As its almost an EU state now, European terms are used. Anyway 'county' is specifically the US sub-unit of a state or 'hrabství' in the old sense in the UK, though I would certainly dispense with that 2nd translation nowadays.
