The recording head may be a serial type recording head, or may be a full-line type recording head. The serial type recording head is a recording head configured to scan a recording medium in a direction intersecting its conveying direction to record an image. In addition, the full-line type recording head is a recording head having a plurality of nozzles arrayed in a range covering the maximum width of the recording medium.
The full-line type ink jet recording head is preferably used because an image can be recorded at higher speed. The full-line type ink jet recording head is preferably a recording head having a nozzle train arrayed in a direction perpendicular to the conveying direction of the recording medium. In addition, it is preferred that a plurality of full-line type ink jet recording heads be arranged for each ink type (typically, ink color), and the respective recording heads be sequentially arrayed along the conveying direction of the recording medium so as to be parallel to each other.

in general a fixed "array" print-head is called in French "barrette", in LED printing as well as thermal printing. By definition the barrette is full-line, i.e spreads across the full width of the web.The term seems not yet used in ink-jet printing as this technology stayed a long time with serial-type moving head. But new high speed ink-jet presses use a full-line or staggered line array print-head, so the term should follow the same terminology than other NIP technologies.
