Thank you for your comments. I think "diverge" is neutral here, simply meaning to "separate from another route and go in a different direction." The way I understand the sentence is that women are materialistic by nature (with the desire to own/possess things), then eventually take a different route (diverge) when having children, gaining the ability to sacrifice and put others before themselves.

I would say ..."to take to"... since this is not a "diversion" nor a "deviation"... this is instinctive of motherhood..
