Well, I have seen this used in math where the prof intones...."assuming we have k doors for passengers. The the passengers who emerge from the k{super}th door are ..." and he begins writing some formula on the chalk board that has a variable of "k" in it.
Usually, in the USA, I have seen them use "n" more often, but "k" fills the bill, too.

PS The above is partially true at best. As far as I can see, generally in mathematics, "k" denotes the number of elements forming a subset of a total of "n" elements -- whichever the actual calculation performed. So I guess it should be "kth".
