Non-PRO (1): writeaway

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Well, I certainly enjoyed my very fine porridge oats this morning - accompanied by the first tender fall of snowflakes to grace my part of Germany this winter ;-)) konnte es mir einfach nicht verkneifen... :-)
Woodstock (X) Dec 12, 2009:
@ Andrew That may be true in your country, but in Germany you can buy all sorts of combinations, with rolled or cut grains that range from crunchy to melt-in-your-mouth. The ones that go soggy right away seem to be pretty popular here ... and I don't think the consumers all have dentures.
@ Silvia Here's a quote and another link that might be helpful:

Flaking
"... Typically the three sizes of steel cut oats are used to make instant, baby and quick rolled oats, whereas whole oat groats are used to make regular, medium and thick rolled oats. Oat flakes range from a thickness of 0.36 mm to 1.00 mm."

absolutely;-)

Velvet-smooth flakes ... ... for muesli lovers with dentures
Sarah Bessioud Dec 12, 2009:
Steam treatment of oats The main ingredient of most mueslis is rolled oats, which have undergone a steam treatment during manufacture to soften them to the required extent. In general, the more tender the oat, the longer it has been steamed by the manufacturer.

In response to Andrew...
There are indeed crunchy varieties of muesli, but I don't feel that an "extra zarte Flocken" sticker would appear on this kind.
Lancashireman Dec 12, 2009:
Strange… The general view is that a muesli flake should be ‘crispy’ or ‘crunchy’ and not become soft or tender until soaked in milk.

wonderfully tender

This is not about the size of the flakes but the softness of them - especially important for use in muesli where you can sometimes be chewing away for hours on really tough oats. 'Ultra-tender' sounds a bit odd to my ears, hence the 'wonderfully' - if it will fit on the sticker! Although not a strict translation, I find 'soft and tender' also sounds good.

Examples:
Oats are a wonderfully tender grain which grows a grass with a mild sweetness. Oats grow a bit more slowly than most other grains

Four Leaf Milling Organic Stabilised Rolled Oats - 800gm
Certified organic. Tender Rolled Oats are processed the same as the Stabilized Oats but are rolled very thin....

Likewise, this morning's bowl of granola blew me away: big nut chunks, tender oats and grains, dried fruit, and most important, not sickly sweet like most granolas.

ultra fine

An intuitive guess backed up by a brief surf..!

extra soft

Why make it complicated! See both links from a known company that produces muesli.
Note from asker:
I'm afraid "extra soft" reminds me of toilet paper
Peer comment(s):

agree Barbara Wiebking : Convincing.

neutral Ulrike Kraemer : extra soft tissues or toilet paper, maybe - but cereals? Your reference doesn't convince me ...

neutral Lancashireman : Presumably the manufacturer wants to sell to ***English-speaking*** customers?

neutral Woodstock (X) : This definitely sounds odd to my native US English ears, and your reference doesn't sway me, either, as it is from a translated website.
