Discussion

Nesrin Sep 16, 2008:
Ah, I think that's it, thanks Noha. I think maybe there's just no single equivalent for this unique word إيفّيه (and don't forget to pronounce a شدة on the ف ! :-D )
Noha Kamal, PhD. Sep 16, 2008:
I think the word Nesrin is looking for is أفشة.

catch phrase

I'm not sure if there's an exact equivalent, it may be a punchline sometimes (if it comes at the end of a joke), or a catch phrase if it's used in the following sense:

A catch phrase (or catchphrase) is a phrase or expression recognized by its repeated utterance. (...) Some catch phrases become the de facto "trademark" of the person or character with whom they originated, and can be instrumental in the typecasting (beneficially or otherwise) of that actor. This is especially the case with comedy actors.

Oh, I think a catch phrase is more what we call لازمة in Egypt!!

But I'm also sure there's another Egyptian word for "punchline", I just can't think of it right now!
