Arabic term

مكتسبات حضارية - muktasebaat HiDaariya

Arabic to English Social Sciences Government / Politics Complete organizational name
Greetings to all.

Would appreciate some clarification of this expression into the English. The various terms I've heard from some friends unfortunately don't seem quite clear.

Many thanks in advance for any help by ProZ.com colleagues.

Khair, in shaa' Allah.

Feliciations and best wishes to all Muslim friends everywhere on the auspicious occasion of Eid al-adHa al-mubarak:

عيدكم مبارك، كل عام وأنتم بخير

Eidkum mubarak, kul 3am wa entum bikhair.

Alexander Yeltsov Dec 30, 2006:
"Gains of civilization" or "cultural achievements" depending on the context.
Happy New Year!
Eid al-adhha al-mubarak
randam Dec 30, 2006:
Stephen, both components of the expression have different meanings:
حضارة could be : civilization or culture
مكتسبات might mean: benefits, gains, or acquistions. Therefore an interpretation is not possible without a context or examples.

cultural accruements

Stephen, these are cultural aspects (material and non-material) aqcuired over time by a people/nation/country as a result of coming in contact with different people/nation/country in peaceful or military ways (travel, trade, immigration, conquest, etc.) They slowly becoming absorbed into the acquiring culture and become part of it.

Randa's "Cultural Acquisitions" are probably the closest. I would avoid "inheritance" for reasons mentioned by sal4trans, and "achievements" because they are more "acquired from outside" than "achieved by oneself"

Acquired Civilizational Wealth

المكتسبات الحضارية هي مجموع ما أنتجته حضارة معينة من علوم وأشباء محسوسة وطرق الحياة.
I think that "inheritances" would be what is left behind by those who are no longer here, and which would be a good translation for "الموروثات الحضارية" or "التراث الحضاري". When we talk about al-Muktasabaat, it is usually in a context of what we already have, and what we should do to add to that which is already here. The perspective is different: when we talk about inheritances, we are looking backwards, when we talk about al-Muktasabaat, we are looking forwards.
