[...] Translators just didn't get recognition, they didn't expect to make much of a living, just get by. Very few people were actually trained as translators, but most had a solid college education and a solid knowledge of languages, at least their own language. I had a friend who fell exactly into that category and my circle of friends expanded to include other translators. I found them to be much more interesting as people, and discovered that we often had similar life experiences. I never had trouble making friends, but I always felt "different" and I'm sure they felt it too. When my friend retired, she recommended me as her replacement. I now entered the realm of Reinsurance, of which I knew nothing. I was also the only translator there, and didn't have much to fall back on. However, it was another notch up....
On my new job, I started looking through the files, asking questions and got the company to enroll me in Insurance courses. The College of Insurance was across the street, and I consulted fire codes, insurance policies and fire extinguisher catalogs in their library. I was learning what I had never had the luxury of being able to do before: research. The first time I had to translate a proposal for purposes of insurance of a nuclear plant, I got a call from the head man in that department, congratulating me on the job I had done. "Compares favorably with what we are used to," he said. What an upper! What happened was that I consulted a document in the files similar to the one I was tackling for guidance, but when I saw that my predecessor had used the word "nucleus" instead of "core", I realized that the files were useless to me. I went across the street to the library and looked up "nuclear plants." I immediately found all the terminology I needed.
It takes a great deal more than that to be a good translator these days, of course. [...] | [...] ಅನುವಾದಕರಿಗೆ ಅಷ್ಟೇನೂ ಮನ್ನಣೆ ಸಿಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಅವರು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಆದಾಯ ಗಳಿಸುವ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆಯನ್ನೂ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಹಾಗೇ ಸುಮ್ಮನೆ ಆ ವೃತ್ತಿಗೆ ಬರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕೇವಲ ಕೆಲವೇ ಜನರಷ್ಟೇ ನಿಜಕ್ಕೂ ಅನುವಾದಕರಾಗಿ ತರಬೇತಿ ಪಡೆದಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಆದರೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನವರು ಸಮರ್ಥ ಕಾಲೇಜು ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಮತ್ತು ಭಾಷೆಗಳ ಸಮರ್ಥ ಜ್ಞಾನವನ್ನು, ಕನಿಷ್ಟ ತಮ್ಮ ಭಾಷೆಯ ಜ್ಞಾನವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಈ ವರ್ಗಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರುವ ನನ್ನ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತನೊಬ್ಬನಿದ್ದ ಮತ್ತು ಇತರ ಅನುವಾದಕರನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡಂತೆ ನನ್ನ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರ ವಲಯ ದೊಡ್ಡದಾಗುತ್ತ ಹೋಯಿತು. ಜನರಾಗಿ ನನಗೆ ಅವರು ಆಸಕ್ತಿಕರವಾಗಿ ಕಾಣಿಸಿದರು ಮತ್ತು ನಾವು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಸಮಾನ ಜೀವನಾನುಭವಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೆವು ಎಂಬುದು ಕಂಡುಬಂತು. ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ನನಗೆ ಎಂದಿಗೂ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಯಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ ಆದರೆ ನಾನು “ಭಿನ್ನ” ಎಂದು ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ನನಗೆ ಅನಿಸುತ್ತಿತ್ತು ಮತ್ತು ಅವರಿಗೂ ಹಾಗೇ ಅನ್ನಿಸಿರುತ್ತದೆ ಎನ್ನುವ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನನಗೆ ಖಾತರಿಯಿದೆ. ನನ್ನ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತೆ ನಿವೃತ್ತಳಾದಾಗ, ಆಕೆ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಬದಲಿಯಾಗಿ ಶಿಫಾರಸು ಮಾಡಿದಳು. ಈಗ ನಾನು ಮರುಭರವಸೆಯ ಜಗತ್ತಿಗೆ ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸಿದ್ದೆ, ಆದರ ಕುರಿತು ನನಗೆ ಏನೂ ತಿಳಿದಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ನಾನು ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬಳೇ ಅನುವಾದಕಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಹೆಚ್ಚೇನೂ ಕೆಲಸವಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದಾಗ್ಯೂ, ಅದು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಮುಂದಡಿಯಾಗಿತ್ತು… ನನ್ನ ಹೊಸ ಕೆಲಸದಲ್ಲಿ, ನಾನು ಫೈಲ್ಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಲು, ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕೇಳಲು ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದೆ ಮತ್ತು ವಿಮೆಯ ಕೋರ್ಸ್ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ನೋಂದಾಯಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಂತೆ ನನ್ನ ಕಂಪನಿಯನ್ನು ಕೋರಿದೆ. ವಿಮೆಯ ಕಾಲೇಜು ಅದೇ ರಸ್ತೆಯಲ್ಲಿತ್ತು ಮತ್ತು ಅವರ ಗ್ರಂಥಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಗ್ನಿಶಾಮಕ ಕೋಡ್ಗಳು, ವಿಮಾ ನೀತಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಅಗ್ನಿಶಾಮಕ ಕೈಪಿಡಿಗಳನ್ನು ಪರಿಶೀಲಿಸಿದೆ. ಹಿಂದೆಂದೂ ನನಗೆ ಇರದಿದ್ದ ಐಷಾರಾಮಿತನವನ್ನು ನಾನು ಕಲಿಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದೆ: ಅದು ಸಂಶೋಧನೆ. ಮೊದಲ ಸಲ ಅಣುಸ್ಥಾವರಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ವಿಮೆಯ ಉದ್ದೇಶದ ಪ್ರಸ್ತಾವನೆಯನ್ನು ನಾನು ಅನುವಾದಿಸಬೇಕಾಗಿತ್ತು, ಇಲಾಖೆಯ ಮುಖ್ಯಸ್ಥರಿಂದ ನನಗೆ ಕರೆ ಬಂದಿತು, ಅವರು ನಾನು ಮಾಡಿದ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಅಭಿನಂದಿಸಿದರು. “ಈ ಹಿಂದೆ ನಾವು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದುದಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಲಿಸಿದರೆ ಎಂಥ ಅದ್ಭುತ ಕೆಲಸ!” ಎಂದು ಅವರು ಹೇಳಿದರು. ಆಗಿದ್ದೇನೆಂದರೆ ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶನಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ನಾನು ಪರಿಶೀಲಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಕಡತಕ್ಕೆ ಸಮನಾದ ಕಡತವನ್ನು ನಾನು ಪರಿಶೀಲಿಸಿದೆ, ಆದರೆ ನನ್ನ ಹಿಂದಿನವರು “ಧಾತು” ಅನ್ನುವ ಪದದ ಬದಲಾಗಿ “ಕೇಂದ್ರ” ಅನ್ನುವ ಪದ ಬಳಸಿದ್ದರು, ಆ ಕಡತಗಳು ಅನುಪಯುಕ್ತ ಎಂದು ನನಗೆ ತಿಳಿಯಿತು. ನಾನು ರಸ್ತೆಯ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಗ್ರಂಥಾಲಯಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋದೆ ಮತ್ತು “ಅಣು ಸ್ಥಾವರಗಳ” ಕುರಿತ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಓದಿದೆ. ನನಗೆ ಬೇಕಾಗಿದ್ದ ಎಲ್ಲ ಪದಗಳು ನನಗೆ ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ತಕ್ಷಣವೇ ಸಿಕ್ಕವು. ಈ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಅನುವಾದಕರಾಗಲು ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಪರಿಶ್ರಮ ಅಗತ್ಯವಿದೆ, ಖಂಡಿತವಾಗಿ […] |
